Your passport should not be Handwritten

Handwritten passports have been cancelled as per government rules and will not be accepted across the world from November 25, 2015.  The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has said that handwritten passports will be discontinuing traveling. This is done because the passports that are machine readable is more secure and there is less chance of fraud practices.

To change name in the passport

You should know that you can’t travel with a passport having old name in case of marriage or due to some other reason. If you are having old name then you can face problems. So it’s very important to have a newpasport name on your passport  You have to fill the application, along with the documents that are to be submitted to get a new passport are:

  • Gazette notification specifying your changed name
  • A fresh identity certificate specifying your changed name
  • A sworn affidavit as per Annexure “E”.

Expiry date of passport

Citizen having passport should not travel with a passport that is facing expiry soon. There are some countries that won’t allow you go if your passport is six months away from its expiry date. Places you can’t travel if your passport is 6 months away from expiry date:

  • Europe
  • Asia
  • America

India allows you to apply for a re-issue of the passport if your passport is set to expire in a year. To avoid facing a fresh address check by the police, apply for a re-issue of the passport within three years after the expiry of the existing passport.

Photo on the passport matters a lot, often you don’t give importance to the photo on your passport it’s generally advisable to follow the international regulations for passport photos. You should not paste a smiling face photo of yours, this doesn’t means that you have to make a cold, dull face, but it’s best to avoid those big smiles.

For the Indian passport you must know that, you should have a “neutral expression” on your face, and your photo should have a “white background.

You should not apply any stickers on passport 

You should not stick any type of stickers on your passport as it is not legal in most countries. Though, in some passports you will find that there are easily removable stickers that are sticked by the staff in abroad airports but that stickers would not create any problem for you as that is the part of their internal verification and is accepted by other countries.

Types of passports in India

 There are three types of passport available in India:

  • Type ‘P’ for “Personal”– this passport is normal Passport having Navy Blue cover. If you want to travel to travel normally for outing , studying, or for business trips than you will issue this personal passport.


  • Type ‘D’ for “Diplomatic”– this Passport is issued to Indian diplomats, top ranking government officials and diplomatic couriers.
  • Type ‘S’ for “Service or Official”– It is a white colored passport and is issued to individuals that represent the Indian government on official business. This is also known as official passport.

Ordinary passport contains 36 Visa pages that are issued for Rs.1500 but the citizen travelling frequently to abroad can issue Jumbo passport which contains 60 visa pages for Rs.2000.

A citizen should issue Jumbo passports as per the availability of passports. The citizens who are interested in applying for Jumbo passports have the facility to say and opt for Jumbo passport at the time of submitting the passport application at Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).

It should be known to you that the passport which has pages less than 2 will not be considered or accepted in some countries. If you are not aware of this and you have not checked your passport than please check your passport to ensure that you have enough visa pages. As there is no provision of additional booklets/pages. You will have to apply for reissuance of passport following standard procedures. So, frequent travelers should opt for Jumbo Passport containing 60 pages.
