The FIFA World Cup is the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world and is contested by the senior men’s national teams from the 208 Member Associations of FIFA.

The competition has been played every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War. It fulfils FIFA’s objectives to touch the world, develop the game, and build a better future through a variety of ways. India has been provisionally selected as the sixth venue to host the U-17 FIFA World Cup in 2017.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 Venues

India has been provisionally selected as venue for U-17 WC 2017 and joins Kochi, Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Margao and Kolkata. The initial short-list of 10 venues in the host cities of New Delhi, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai, Margao, Bangalore, Kolkata, Kochi, Guwahati, and Navi Mumbai was announced in December 2013. Following the reception of FIFA’s technical report, the AIFF cleared Kochi, Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Margao and Kolkata as the venues for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi was the first venue to be announced. Each of the six venues selected are expected to host matches of a group. The 24 teams will be divided into six groups.

The tournament will need to have 24 training pitches — four for each host city — but the LOC is yet to sign contracts of these training venues.

FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 Teams

The date of the tournament and the timings of 52 matches to be played among 24 countries, including hosts India, were yet to be finalized. The dates of the tournament will have to be proposed by Local Organizing Committee and approved by FIFA. The timing of the matches will have to be decided after consultations with the tournament broadcasters. The 23-day tournament is likely to be held in the latter half of 2017.

A total of 24 teams qualify for the final tournament. In addition to India who qualified automatically as hosts, the other 23 teams qualify from six separate continental competitions. Starting from 2017, the Oceania Football Confederation will receive an additional slot (in total two), while UEFA will have five instead of six slots.

At FIFA U-17 World Cup, a chance for students to have a ball

There is something to chill for football players around the Ernakulum district as they will be getting a chance to be a part of the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup by assisting the players to the pitch before the match starts and becoming the flag bearers of the participating teams before every U-17 match.

“They could also join the Football Mamangam by taking up the roles of ballboys and ballgirls. The initiative is part of the Mission XI Million programme that aims at enrolling thousands of schoolchildren across various age groups in the country to play and enjoy football. We plan to reach out to nearly 500 schools in Ernakulam in the coming days. Already, 325 schools have come on board,” said Adeela Abdullah, Sub Collector of Fort Kochi.

The schools that have collaborated with the FIFA and All-India football Federation Of India will get opportunity to present a football seminar in the beginning of new academic year. Promising aspirants will also get some valuable tips from the top coaches.

The aspiring students will also be getting a chance to take part in four on four matches. The young students will get opportunity to take a part in a contest where they will be able to check out their dribbling and ball control skills.

Celebrated coaches will help them in enhancing their skills on various aspects such as defending, shooting, goal keeping, passing, snatching and others. These master classes will be a part of 360 degree approach which will help them in up gradation of their skills.

Ms. Adeela said “We have around 175 applications with us. Many schools could not make it in the first round due to the final exams. They could contact the office of the Fort Kochi Sub Collector to get the forms and the football kits. FIFA would only be happy, if more schools partner in this initiative,” she said.
